During the 1970s and 1980s, the US Army photographed thousands of military uniforms, boots, helmets, and experimental clothing designs, creating an archive that looks surprisingly similar to a fashion catalog. The photographs came from the Natick Soldier Systems Center in Massachusetts, where the Army developed and tested clothing and equipment for soldiers. With colorful backgrounds, professional lighting, and models posing in military gear, many of the images look more like vintage fashion campaigns than government records. Decades later, French visual researcher Matthieu Nicol discovered the collection of more than 14,000 photographs and selected 350 images for his 2024 book Fashion Army. What started as military documentation has since become a fascinating look at the connection between fashion and military design. Photo credit: U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center #Pubity
