I want to be clear: I don’t think school psychologists should have to spend their long weekends catching up on work. But this weekend, I knew I had personal things coming up that would take me away from work, and I decided one focused hour at a café would help me return feeling more prepared. In my early years, “bringing work home” looked very different. My laptop would sit in its bag while I thought about everything I should be doing. Then I’d pull it out here and there, half-work throughout the day, and somehow lose hours without feeling like I had accomplished much, or actually enjoyed my time off. Now, if I choose to bring work home, I give it one defined pocket of time. And I use tools that help that time actually count: •A Master Dashboard helps me see what needs my attention without holding every deadline in my head. •Evaluation and meeting trackers help me decide what actually needs to come next. •Report writing blurbs I’ve added over the years give me strengths-based language and frameworks to pull from instead of starting with a blank page. •An Evaluation Summary Sheet helps me organize the most important findings before I write or present them. •Meeting and family communication scripts help me prepare without spending hours rehearsing every possible conversation. Then, when that time is over, I close the computer and return to my life. The goal is to stop letting unfinished work quietly occupy my mind. These are the kinds of tools I’ve built inside the Resource Drive. So whether you have one focused hour or an entire workday, you can spend less of it figuring out where to start. The link to our tools is in my bio! And if you’re an early career psych looking for tools and a place to work through how to make this possible in your setting, in our Fall Cohort I spend 9 weeks with you breaking down the greatest pain points in the field and give you the tools, language and strategies to work through your particular scenario so you can get back to what made you choose this field!
