Some years ago, I found myself stuck in a cycle of bingeing and restricting. At the time, I was doing a lot of fitness shoots, castings, etc. I was constantly over-restricting my diet and over-training. Motivation would carry me through until the “event” — the shoot or casting — and as soon as it was over, I’d binge. All the food you wouldn’t expect me to eat 😅 I’d tell myself it was “just today,” but then I’d struggle to stop for days or even weeks. Eventually, I’d find something new to work towards, restrict again, and try to burn off what I’d gained so that I’d feel confident enough to take my shirt off again. This is a very complex topic and definitely needs more than one post. And just to be clear — I’m not an eating disorder specialist. This isn’t advice, just my personal experience. Here’s what helped me: I realised I was giving all my power away to looking good for something outside of myself (like shoots and castings). So instead, I found a new motivation — to look and feel good every day, because that’s how I wanted to show up for myself and my community. I set a goal to be my best today, not someday in the future. That completely changed how I treated myself day to day. I also embraced imperfection. I started retraining my nutrition habits from “all or nothing” to actually enjoying my diet every day — INCLUDING some “naughtiness” I used to avoid (until I binged on it). This taught me that I don’t need to binge, because I can just have a bit more chocolate tomorrow ☺️ I realised my bingeing came from a story I was telling myself — that I can’t enjoy food when I’m dieting, so I’d better eat as much as possible now, before Monday 😜 This is only scratching the surface of what I learned during that time, and it’s still an ongoing process of understanding my mind and body. Maybe I’ll share more about it? If there’s one thing I want you to know, it’s this: whatever your relationship with food looks like, it’s always evolving. Don’t be hard on yourself, and try to appreciate the wisdom you’re gaining along your wellbeing journey. 💛 And please seek professional support if you feel stuck in an unhealthy place 🙏 Keep going team! 💙 Show Up For Yourself Www.alexcrockford.com
