“Một năm nào đó, rồi chúng ta cũng sẽ quên mất tên của một người, quên mất luôn những thói quen dáng vẻ ấy."
On 27 August 1770, in Stuttgart, in the Duchy of Württemberg, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born, a figure who would leave an indelible mark upon the fabric of Western thought. The son of a public official, he received a solid education early oriented towards classical and theological studies. At Tübingen, in the Stift, he formed intellectual bonds with Hölderlin and Schelling: three young men destined to become leading figures of German culture. After years of private tutoring in Bern and Frankfurt, Hegel arrived in Jena, where in 1801 he began his university career. He witnessed the Battle of Jena and, according to the celebrated anecdote, beheld in Napoleon the “World-Spirit on horseback.” There followed the years in Bamberg, Nuremberg (where he directed the gymnasium and composed the Science of Logic), Heidelberg, and, from 1818, Berlin, where he became the official philosopher of Restoration Prussia. He died in 1831 during a cholera epidemic, leaving an inheritance that still today compels every serious philosophical reflection to confront him. Hegel’s work is articulated as a unitary system in which reason is both the substance and the very process of the real. In the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) the path of consciousness, from sense-certainty to absolute knowing, reveals that truth is not a static given but the result of a dialectical movement. Contradiction is the immanent motor of the whole: every determination, driven beyond itself, generates its own negation and, through Aufhebung, rises to a higher synthesis that both preserves and surpasses. In the Science of Logic this movement becomes ontology: being, nothing and becoming open the way to the logic of essence and of the concept, culminating in the Absolute Idea. The Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences and the Elements of the Philosophy of Right extend the dialectic to nature, to subjective, objective and absolute spirit. History, far from being a contingent accumulation of events, is the progressive unfolding of the freedom of Spirit: “reason governs the world.” Hegel’s importance in the history of philosophy remains a cardinal point to this day. He both closes and surpasses Kantian transcendental idealism, restoring to reason the capacity to know the Absolute. Against every residual dualism, he affirms the identity of thought and being, of subject and substance. His influence traverses the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: Marx stood the dialectic “on its head,” making it an instrument of social critique; Kierkegaard and Nietzsche reacted vigorously against the totalising system; Husserlian and Heideggerian phenomenology, the Frankfurt School, neo-Marxism, dialectical theology, and even currents of political liberalism and contemporary hermeneutics remain, in different ways, indebted to his language and categories. Put simply: the impact Hegel exerted upon human history is not measured solely within academic halls, for his thought has shaped more than a century of human affairs. The idea that freedom is the immanent end of the historical process has nourished emancipatory movements and, at the same time, justifications of absolute powers. The concept of the State as the “actuality of ethical freedom” has furnished arguments both to theorists of the rule of law and to apologists of authoritarian regimes. The dialectic of lord and bondsman has offered an interpretive key to the dynamics of recognition and domination that still today illuminates social, colonial and gender relations. Thanks to this we may recognise that Hegel did not merely describe the world; he taught us to think it as a totality in movement, compelling every subsequent generation to decide whether to inherit, criticise or overturn his legacy. Happy birthday, Dr Hegel, and thank you for the contribution you have made to humankind. #philosophy #hegel #germanidealism #idealism #fyp
