Exactly. and that's why recently I've seen there's been (more of) a focus on qualitative research and patient & public involvement. Data means nothing without context. Cultural competency is hot rn because sm of it is missing.

this is a DEI conversation and we're essentially saying that is tokenism ignoring the skills needed to be considered. we're becoming complicit in our own eraser by complaining about representation.

I agree academia is elitist and there are people who value peer reviewed research over real experiences. That doesn't stop the work from being revolutionary and important. I am not an academic but do read theory, my friends who are completely disinterested in the literature come to the same conclusions as the books do, the real people do think these things even if they don't use the same language. I fully support to lead with your blackness, especially in algorithmic spaces, do what you can to best advocate for you! But the og video was just having a discussion on what's next. Neoliberalism is such an insidious ideology we are fighting for a seat at the oppresser's table and we believe our inclusion is a revolutionary one. And in comparison to colonial times it is, but that is just it, they want that to be your baseline, so anything more you believe is a sign of change when it is in actuality it is a necessary condition of neoliberalism. We should be loud and proud we are black and doing incredible things but that is not meaningful progression in and of itself. What does your representation and inclusion actually mean?? Is it meaningfully radical for you to be in this space if the space still operates on hierarchal ideology? That permeates on inclusion of a small number of black people to keeps us satiated. Is the system white vs black, in that case maybe the sheer numbers and representation is enough. Or is the system owning class vs working class or global north vs global south? In that case what does your representation mean in rattling these systems? Do you want to own too? And just reorder the oppressive system so you are in a better position? Or is the system flawed and progression is better seen in liberating practises? If I am in hiring position as a black women, and can advocate for a fellow black women, of course I would. We must eat, our presence will inspire our younger peers, our thought will fill gaps in overlooked parts of our industry, and in turn reform the industry going forward - the creator of the og video did not deny this. We must act in accordance with our current reality or else we'll be eaten alive by the forces against us.

Mmmmmmmm you’re so right about that “what will the white people say” “what will he white people think “ “ you’re making black people look bad” instead of addressing real issues about access that affect black people in creative and business spaces. And stating those things doesn’t mean you are painting a victim picture.
