BACK TO THE PLACE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING... It's taken me nearly 7 years to return to this exact location. What happened to me here left me so mentally shaken that it took almost a year before I could bring myself to go back into the woods. If you've ever heard me talk about my first terrifying encounter, this is where it happened. This is the place where I walked up on something that clearly didn't want me there. A tree was broken, I was growled at, and then I was followed out of the forest by what sounded like a group of something. They were walking and pacing me as I tried to make my way out, throwing sticks and other objects at me along the way. This is an extremely remote area deep inside a nature preserve where motor vehicles aren't allowed. Getting back here means traveling by bicycle, horseback, or yon foot. And when you're this far back, you're completely alone in the middle of what feels like a true Florida jungle. As absolutely beautiful as this place is, I believe there's something living back here that can absolutely terrify you when it wants to. That day changed the way I do things in the woods forever. I no longer try to move quietly and stealthily through these areas wearing camouflage and looking like a hunter. I make my presence known. I don't want to catch anything off guard again, and I certainly don't want to repeat what happened that day. For nearly 7 years, this place has been in the back of my mind. Going back wasn't easy, but I'm glad I finally did it. It felt good to face that fear, get some closure, and finally explore this area again. This time I had my good friend Matt with me, and we were able to cover a lot of ground and check out some incredible areas.
