You don’t need luck to build wealth on a 9 to 5. You need to know how to play the corporate game 👇🏻 People think the ones getting ahead are just lucky, or got handed something. I’ve sat in HR for 11+ years. Here’s what I’ve learned from the inside, including the stuff nobody tells you. 1 - Start where the money is I started my career in banking at JPMorgan Chase and Capital One. Your industry sets your pay ceiling more than your title does. The same role can pay very differently depending on the company. 2 - Your raise was decided before your review Most companies set a merit budget months ahead. For 2026 it averaged about 3.3%. Your manager is splitting a fixed pot, so the time to make your case is before budgets are set, not in your review meeting. 3 - Know your pay band Every role has a salary range, and where you sit in it controls how big your raises can be. If you’re near the bottom, push for an adjustment. If you’re at the top, raises shrink, and the only way up is a promotion or a new company. Ask your manager or HR for your range. 4 - Promotions are a numbers game Companies plan to promote only about 8% of employees this year. Don’t wait to be noticed. Tell your manager what level you want, ask what it takes, and bring proof of your results to every check-in. 5 - Leave for a level, not a lateral Job hopping pays less than it used to. Right now switchers only out-earn stayers by about 0.7%. The big jump comes when you move up a level or into a better-paying industry, not when you take the same job somewhere else. 6 - Take every dollar of your benefits 401(k) match, HSA, ESPP, tuition reimbursement. That’s part of your pay, and most people leave some of it on the table. I max my 401(k), HSA and FSA every year. For 2026, that’s $24,500 into a 401(k) and $8,750 into a family HSA, all before taxes. Two kids, a mortgage, daycare, and still building wealth on a 9 to 5. Learn the game, then play it on purpose. Follow along for the stuff HR won’t tell you.
