Proud mom, of not a child .. but a young man. My first born child/ man turned 21 on Sunday. This was a moment captured in Tennessee at my cousins wedding over the weekend. He slow danced with me, I cried and told him how proud I am to be his mom. I shared promises of how I will always show up, support him and do anything in the world for him. That is how I love my children. I show up consistently, I am a safe space for them to share anything with me safely and non-judgmental. I raise them in a safe, loving and nurturing environment. Stability, presence and love in action. I tell them things they sometimes don’t want to hear, that they need. My son completed his EMT and Intervention trainings. He is now close to completing Fire Academy, as a squad leader. Day one the instructor chose six people out of 40 and he was one. He never got amazing grades, I was always helping him extra with school and getting tutors until high school. Now he gets all A’s, on all written and physical tests. We went into his 21st with a bottle of sparkling cider. We spent the following day as a family in Nashville on Broadway and just enjoyed him turning 21. We talk about generational trauma, it stopped here. I had my son at 24. He saved and changed my life. I promised myself that my kids would not experience anything that I did growing up. No abuse. No drunk parents every night. No drug dealer mom’s boyfriends. No domestic violence. No kidnapping. Keeping my word. Showing up and being present. No guilt, shame and toxic parenting. Healthy co-parenting with his father since he was 18 months old. We are very close and on the same page, with the same messaging. If you have met my son, you know that he has the “thing”. He is magnetic and is loved universally. I am so grateful for my man son, our family weekend of love and for each day that I get the opportunity to be a better and more loving mom.
