When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth (1970) directed by Val Guest. . . Hammer Films aimed to capitalize on the success of 1966's One Million Years B.C. with another prehistoric epic mixing stop motion dinosaurs with scantily dressed cavepeople. This time around, however, Ray Harryhausen was unavailable, having reunited with his longtime producer Charles H. Schneer to produce The Valley of Gwangi. As a result, Jim Danforth, a supremely gifted animator in his own right who had already scored an Oscar nomination by this point, was put in charge of supervising the movie's visual effects. . . The effects sequences of When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth not only built on the foundation laid by Harryhausen, but in many ways surpassed even his achievemnts, with an attention to detail and exquisite blend of techniques that imbued this prehistoric world with its primal beauty. Assisting Danforth in the ardous production were a skilled team of craftspeople, including model maker Roger Dicken, optical effects artist Brian Johnson, matte painters Ray Caple and Les Bowie, and fellow animator David Allen. . . Allen animated the chasmosaurus fight scene shown here, with Danforth largely occupied with matte paintings and shot setups. While never admitting it during shooting, Allen had never animated a four-legged puppet before and was supremely intimated by the task. The movie went on to earn Danforth his second Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects, but lost to Disney's Bedknobs and Broomsticks. . .
