You pay the slow life tax when you say no to the third party in one weekend. You pay it when you leave Christmas Eve early and can actually prep for the morning. You pay it when you choose pajamas over another house, your own tree over someone else's schedule, PEACE over keeping everyone happy. Sometimes it comes with guilt or with a disappointed phone call or people thinking you don't care about tradition. It stings. Grandma told me people avoid the slow holidays because they don't want to pay that price. It’s uncomfortable. They want the ✨magic ✨ but not the boundaries. We want the memories, but not the empty calendar that makes room for them. Not the "we can't make it this year." Without an explanation What she didn't say to me but I noticed was that the December alternative is far more expensive. Your nervous system is going bonkers. Your patience is short, the kids melting down in the car between houses. And we wonder why we feel so run done come January. I started paying attention to where December was draining me. My husband and I started saying no to the visits that felt like obligations and the traditions we kept just because we felt like we had to. I stopped the version of me that was always driving, always hosting, always "on." 🤪 We started small when the kids were little with fewer stops. Only one gathering instead of four. And a whole day at home in our pajamas. 🎄 And yep, sometimes it feels like I'm letting people down. They’ve told me it’s “sad”. Sometimes it feels like I'm missing out and it's uncomfortable to not explain every choice. But what we’ve gained is a Christmas I actually remember and kids who aren't overstimulated. I actually enjoy the season. 🎅🏼 So yes, I'll choose the slow life tax every time from now on.
