South America Journal: Entries 43-46 ••• ↟ 43: Huayhuash Circuit, Day 6 ↟ We hit the trail early but were stopped fast by a landslide that had wiped out the trail. The fall extended to rushing whitewater. Above was just as steep. We headed back to town where our host from last night led us to an alternate route. Our unintended detour and additional vert added ~3 hours. We had planned to make it to LLamac today, but that is now seeming unlikely. When we got to Gashpapama, we talked to a local guide to see if the shortcut on the map was a viable option. Unfortunately, that route has an impassable river crossing – white water over-the-head deep, so that’s a no go. The new plan is Jahuacocha for the night. All of the food I have remaining is different versions of cold mash, oats, bars, and potato chips. Nothing like a challenging section of trail to make you appreciate the luxuries of off trail life. In the afternoon, we got pelted by hail going over the pass and saw a swift coyote disappear into the rocks.  We met a handful of nice hikers today. I live for these little interactions. Though they are short-lived, there’s a level of connection even in short moments on the trail that seems to transcend the small talk of modern society, and I love that.  ••• ↟ 44: Huayhuash Circuit, final miles ↟ We made it to Llamac around 10am, completing this trek in 6.5 days. We arranged transport to Chiquian, and it rained the rest of the day. From Chiquian, we took the night bus to Lima. This was by far the low of the trip for me. The bus smelled like pee, the seats barely reclined, and my ear refused to clear as we descended in elevation. It hurt so much I felt it in my teeth. ••• ↟ 45-46: Lima ↟ It was a terrible night. I can barely hear out of my right ear. Though it is slowly clearing now, it’s still super uncomfortable. We got to Lima around 4am. As Moonshine put it, “It really says something when even the locals won’t leave the bus station until the sun comes up.” Once the sun was up, we headed to the Miraflores for our final night. We spent our final day eating fresh bread and admiring local art. This trip has been a wild, whimsical, magical whirlwind.  ••• #peru
