@orderofthetile: The Charleston is my one chance to shape my hand before play begins. I choose the twenty twenty six card, and deal my thirteen. The goal is to keep what builds my hand, and to send my neighbours tiles that stay loose. I turn the helper dots off in the gear, so I learn to spot dead weight myself. Here is why I spread. Matched tiles, or tiles that run together, build the hand of whoever receives them. So I pass one from each group, an odd beside an even, and a wind or dragon when I hold one. Each tile lands alone in my neighbour's rack, and the game grades it a sound pass. Across the table, I spread the same way, and it grades sound again. On the last pass, the spread still holds, and every tile that plays together stays with me. Three passes, three sound grades. I gave away tiles that stay loose, and kept the ones that work together. Come and practice the Charleston with me at Order of the Tile. I shall save you a seat.
