🌺 Corporal David O’Connor had served in Iraq and some of Afghanistan’s most dangerous districts. On his fourth operational tour, he was killed by an Afghan policeman while on his way to help train local police officers. Born on 16 June 1985, David joined the Royal Marines on 13 May 2002, aged just 16. He qualified as a Royal Marines Commando in January 2003 and went on to serve in Iraq in 2004. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2007, serving with Charlie Company, 40 Commando, in Kajaki. In 2010, he returned to Helmand for another tour, this time in Sangin, where his dedication and bravery earned him a Commander Joint Operations’ Commendation. Known to his comrades as “Dangerous Dave”, he was remembered for his dry humour, love of film quotes and willingness to help younger Marines. After completing his Junior Command Course in 2011, David wanted to use his experience to guide younger Marines. On 29 September 2012, he returned to Afghanistan as an acting corporal and section commander with Charlie Company, 40 Commando Royal Marines. On 24 October, he was part of an eight-person foot patrol near Char Kutsa in Helmand Province. The patrol was travelling to train Afghan Local Police in first aid and recognising roadside bomb threats. As they approached a checkpoint, gunmen opened fire. David and Corporal Channing Day, a 25-year-old Army medic accompanying the patrol, were both fatally wounded. A subsequent inquest established that an Afghan Uniformed Police officer had fired the fatal shots. David was 27 years old. He and Channing were repatriated to Britain together on 30 October 2012. His funeral took place at St Faith’s Church in Havant on 15 November. His mother, Rosemary, later donated a cross made from shell cartridges by his fellow Royal Marines to the church, where it is displayed on Remembrance Sunday. 🌺 At just 19 years old, Fusilier Gordon Gentle had served in the British Army for only eight months when a roadside bomb killed him in Iraq. An inquest later found that equipment which could probably have prevented the explosion had not been fitted to his vehicle. Born on 23 December 1984 and raised in Pollok, Glasgow, Gordon loved Celtic, football and cars. He dreamed of becoming a mechanic and owning his own garage. He joined the Army in October 2003, aged 18, and trained at Catterick. His father George later described Gordon’s passing-out parade in April 2004 as the proudest moment of his life. Gordon joined C Company, 1st Battalion, Royal Highland Fusiliers, deploying to Basra in May 2004 as part of Operation TELIC. On 28 June, he volunteered as a top-cover sentry in a Snatch Land Rover escorting a convoy from Basra Palace towards the Kuwaiti border. Around ten minutes into the journey, an insurgent-planted roadside bomb exploded beside the vehicle, leaving Gordon critically wounded by shrapnel. His comrades desperately tried to save him, performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before he was taken to Basra General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Just three days earlier, Gordon had spoken to his mother Rose on the telephone. An inquest later heard that electronic countermeasure equipment was available in Iraq but had not reached his vehicle because of supply failures. The coroner concluded it would probably have prevented the bomb detonating. On 7 July 2004, around 800 mourners gathered at St James’ Parish Church in Pollok for his funeral. Before saying goodbye, his mother placed five red roses inside his coffin. Then bow in Ruku and say “Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem.” Stand again, then go into Sujood (prostration) and say “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la.” Each Rakat includes two Sujoods. After completing the required Rakats, sit and recite Tashahhud, Durood, and a short dua.
