I will never understand why deadly force seems to be the answer in so many mental health crises. This young man was experiencing psychosis, holding a paring knife, and clearly crying out for help. His mother had already called police two days earlier. Why couldn't they have kept their distance, de-escalated the situation, or used less-lethal options? I understand a knife can be dangerous, but simply holding one while experiencing psychosis doesn't automatically justify being shot and killed. If he was standing still and not threatening anyone, why was deadly force necessary? This young man needed psychiatric help, not a bullet. 💔
