I agree with you, my grandma would call it apathetic racism. Not overtly hateful but not considering anyone else.

a lot of his characters are skeletons or corpses so we don't know what colour their skin was when they were alive. maybe jack was a tall skinny black guy when he was alive 🥺

Also, the guy Samuel L Jackson played in the mphfpc movie was not (atleast to my knowledge) black in the original book. Which might not even have been something Tim decided on completely himself but still nice. Definitely he's atleast a bit racist tho

I understand where you’re coming from. But respectfully (and I do genuinely mention that) the exact same standard would apply to saying you need to include white people in predominantly black movies.in this context of “there should be more people like me in this” white people would be entirely justified saying the same thing about movies full of black people. (To be clear, I argue this specifically in context of Tim Burton, an I am extremely disappointed and disgusted by Andy Serkus’ behavior and words)

the one movie of his where it REALLY irritates me the lack of representation in it is his Charlie and the Chocolate factory adaptation, because what do you mean it's a world wide competition yet all the children were white?

Maybe a controversial take, but I think Corpse Bride was his last good film . Man hasn’t made a good film since 2000s

He gives his characters big eyes, eye bags and hallow cheeks. Anyone of any race can obtain those features

when I was in art school for computer animation, like a high profile school, we had to fight for reasons to include POC and queer characters. there could be no un purposeful, non story narrative driven reason for including diversity. there is a streak in animation for this mentality. its outdated, i hated it then and I hate it now, but its not surprising to me. its a systemic issue in how art educational round the subject of animation on how to include minority characters. I went to RCAD 2013-2016. now I do social work.

it's definitly not a hatefull racism, but more a "i've decided what black people can be and look like in the media i make" racism. a limiter of black people and what they can be in his own mind rather then hate or dislike. which is just sad atp to see still imo

I can see this. I think he’s trying to make it exactly how he wants an envision it and I think he just really wants to do good movies, but doesn’t know how to talk about them kindly

As someone who's in somewhat of an artistic sphere, a lot white people just have white defaultism. White passing characters are allowed to exist, while anyone not fitting that mold has to have a "reason" to exist. White characters get designed out of genuine desire to create, but characters of colour get designed just to not come off as racist and be left alone. it's truly tragic

I don't think it's coming from a hateful place, just a misinformed one, many people just don't know that there actually are many black people in the goth / alt scene. It's a very outdated stereotype that the goth scene is all white people but it's something many still assume today

He has an artistic vision and he will stick to it. However as a much older guy in Hollywood - it is unsurprising that most of his vision is white. His ideas of what "looks right" is likely influenced from a world where black people werent on TV and living in what was likely a predominantly white area. We see this a lot in other artist work. Skinny white people only draw skinny white people. At least to begin with because its the body they see the most often - their own. It takes real effort for someone to confidently create or include people outside of their traits and it is something people need to be better at and learn what to do. but everyone's first drawing is of themselves. either literally or just their physical traits. Tim just hasnt learnt to reach beyond who he is. Which is a sad reality

Personally I feel like with Tim Burton and a lot of other artists you need to separate the art from the artist this isn't always the case but it is sometimes and it's really just necessary if you want to be able to enjoy certain things

why do we have to constructed people for their art in whatever medium they express it in? art is created by an artist based on their ideas and imagination in their head. how is it racist to say that people just dont fit the astheic imagery he sees in his head for his creation... its art... race doesnt exactly play a part in that. its someone trying to create externally imagery or sounds that exist in their mind... sharing their world with others. you either like it or you dont. why do we have to turn it into something else. not everything or everyone gives AF about race of political correctness. they just want to make art.

to me it's kinda hard to tell. because I have this friend, we know each other from an afternoon art class and she normally draws women. Extremely pale women with pastel color clothes that almost blend into each other. It looks almost holographic. It's just her artstyle. And it looks really nice. Would i accuse her of racism just because she doesn't want to draw black people? no. It's her art, her style, her work. Not mine to mess with. I can either enjoy it or not. And to me it's the same with movies. They're art. And if the creator created their characters in a certain way, then that's just that. If i don't like it i can still just not watch it. Sure an action seems racist as soon as it's about race, but what about this is actual discrimination? For instance I would have hated it if they put more white people in black panther. Like hell no, not the right setting or story. Also he's not wrong. What good is representation if it's only done to satisfy a quota? If this is just his style then who am I to complain?
