@cowdog1776: McSorley had spent approximately 44 years sailing the Great Lakes and was widely respected as a capable, seasoned captain. He was known for his tough, straightforward personality and extensive knowledge of Great Lakes shipping. On November 9, 1975, McSorley departed Superior, Wisconsin, commanding the 729-foot Edmund Fitzgerald, carrying approximately 26,000 tons of iron ore pellets bound for Detroit. The following evening, the ship encountered a violent storm on Lake Superior, with hurricane-force wind gusts and enormous waves. At approximately 7:10 p.m. on November 10, McSorley made his famous final radio report to Captain Jesse Cooper aboard the nearby Arthur M. Anderson: "We are holding our own." Shortly afterward, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from radar. All 29 crew members, including McSorley, perished. #edmundfitzgerald #lake #steel #fyp #abcxyz
