Pastor, I have a question. If a woman wears pants to church, preaches from the pulpit, or remarries after divorce, is this a sin? Will she be unable to enter heaven because of it? What does the Bible say? This is a topic of considerable controversy in many African churches. Many women feel guilt, shame, or are criticized because of it. Today, let me answer based on the Bible. First: Is it a sin for women to wear pants to church? No, it is not. The Bible in 1 Peter 3:3–4 says: “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” Please note: the Scripture says not to focus only on outward appearance. The Bible has never said that wearing pants is a sin, nor that it is an abomination. God looks at your heart—Is your heart gentle? Do you fear and revere Him? That is what matters most to Him. Second: Is it really impossible for women to preach from the pulpit? No, it is not. Many churches use 1 Timothy 2:12 to restrict women from preaching, but Acts 2:17–18 says: “And it shall come to pass in the last days, said God, I will pour out of my Spirit on all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy...And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.” Children include daughters; servants include women. In the Bible, Deborah was a prophet and also a judge of Israel, leading the entire nation. God never said a woman’s voice is not worth hearing. Third: Are women condemned for divorce and remarriage? No. Jesus in Matthew 5:32 reminds us that divorce is permitted in cases of unfaithfulness. 1 Corinthians 7:15 also says: “But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart.” God hates divorce, that is true. But God does not want His children to slowly wither in toxic relationships. If a husband commits adultery, does not believe in God, or abuses his wife, the wife has the freedom to leave and the right to start again. In Christ, women are never second-class citizens; men and women are equal.
