@fivehole_: Trades in NHL history. The Rangers acquired Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais, while the Bruins received Jean Ratelle, Brad Park and Joe Zanussi. Esposito continued to produce in New York, scoring 42 goals in his first full season with the Rangers and helping them reach the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. Vadnais also became a key part of the Rangers’ blue line. In Boston, Ratelle remained a top offensive centre, while Park became one of the Bruins’ most important defencemen. Both helped Boston reach back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 1977 and 1978. Esposito was famously unhappy about being sent to one of Boston’s biggest rivals. In 2013, he recalled taking less money to stay with the Bruins rather than joining the WHA: “I didn’t choose to leave Boston. … Three weeks later, they traded me.” Source: Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun, June 11, 2013. Looking back, which team do you think won the trade? #PhilEsposito #BradPark #JeanRatelle #BostonBruins #newyorkrangers

The key to the trade for Boston was Brad Park. Harry Sinden wanted a puck control defenceman, given the fact that Bobby Orr was in a precipitous decline with his bad knees.
