Being prepared for the coming of the Lord in the biblical tradition—viewed through the lens of active vigilance —means living in constant spiritual readiness, moral watchfulness, and faithful service because the exact hour of Christ's return is unknown. Watchfulness and Vigilance (Awaiting the Unknown Hour) Jesus repeatedly warns His disciples to stay awake and keep watch, as the Son of Man will come at an unexpected hour (e.g., Matthew 24:42, Mark 13:33). The Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13): The wise virgins carry extra oil for their lamps while the foolish ones are caught unprepared. Biblically, the oil symbolizes an abiding, personal state of grace and a life steadily fueled by the Holy Spirit rather than a last-minute scramble. Repentance and Holiness of Life Preparation is not about calculating end-time dates on a calendar, but about interior conversion.Believers are called to turn away from sin, practice confession or repentance, and cultivate a righteous character. In 2 Peter 3:11–14 (highlighted in many NABRE reflections), Peter asks what sort of people you should be, living in holiness and devotion, so that you may be found "without spot or blemish, at peace" when He arrives. Active Waiting and Stewardship (Working While You Biblical preparation is active, not passive or idle. It means continuing the mission Jesus left behind: making disciples, caring for the vulnerable, and performing "good deeds". In the parable of the faithful and unfaithful servants, the prepared servant is the one actively managing his master’s household responsibly when the master returns. Community and Mutual Encouragement Readiness happens within the body of believers. Hebrews 10:24–25 urges Christians not to neglect meeting together, but to "spurred one another on to love and good deeds" as the Day draws near.
