They attempted to ascend in an unusually strong updraft. "A strong updraft can cause a jet plane to stall while ascending. This occurs because the vertical wind component of the updraft increases the angle of attack (AoA) relative to the wing. If this increase pushes the AoA beyond the wing's critical angle of attack, the airflow separates from the wing surface, resulting in a sudden loss of lift."

1000 bucks as the NTSB factual report and probable cause statement will severely criticize the preflight planning in the first place in the point you make not diverting away from this storm in the second. They put themselves on a razor’s edge of saving this flight going into severe icing and that is exactly why the pilot command has to do proper preflight planning and not be reckless and assuming they can pull the fat out of the fire. He couldn’t and he didn’t.
