@rocketgirlx3: In 2007, Kenton Lee was working at an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya, when he noticed a little girl in a white dress walking beside him. Her shoes were so small that she'd had to cut off the front so her toes could stick out. Kenton couldn't stop thinking about her. Around the world, millions of children grow out of their shoes long before their families can afford new ones. Many end up going barefoot, exposed to cuts, infections and soil-borne parasites. So he had an idea: what if there was a shoe that could grow with a child? There was just one problem. Kenton had no experience in footwear. None. He wasn't a designer or an engineer. He was just a guy from Idaho who couldn't forget a little girl's feet. He took his idea to big shoe companies. They weren't interested. So he decided to build it himself. He founded a nonprofit called Because International, and after years of work, he created The Shoe That Grows. It's a simple sandal made of compressed rubber and leather straps that adjusts with buckles and snaps, so it can expand up to five sizes and last for years. Today, according to the charity, more than 500,000 pairs have been handed out to children around the world. It all started because one man noticed one little girl and refused to look away. Sometimes the best inventions come from people who simply care enough to try.
