@nyunfilter: This is an educational video about the electric interurban and streetcar networks of upstate New York, and how they were replaced. The Rochester and Eastern Rapid Railway connected Rochester to Pittsford, Victor, Canandaigua, and Geneva on a private double-track right of way. New York State Railways operated 338 miles of track across Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Oneida, Canandaigua, and Geneva. Syracuse had over 200 cars on 27 routes. Buffalo's International Railway operated over 900 cars on more than 400 miles of track. National City Lines, backed by General Motors, Firestone, Standard Oil of California, and Phillips Petroleum, acquired over 100 streetcar systems and replaced them with buses. In 1949 the companies were convicted of conspiring to monopolize bus sales and fined $5,000. They were acquitted of conspiring to monopolize transit systems. New York State Railways entered receivership in 1929. Rochester's streetcars ended in 1941 and its subway in 1956. Syracuse converted to buses by 1941. Utica's streetcars ended in 1941. Buffalo's ended in 1950. This is a factual presentation of documented historical events. 📍 Upstate New York #UpstateNewYork #StreetcarHistory #NationalCityLines #UrbanHistory #HiddenHistory
