to anyone who woke up today and felt nothing at all about it, i heard something that i need to pass along. a girl was talking in line behind me at a coffee shop, telling her friend what she does when she gets really sad. she said she closes her eyes and imagines she’s eighty-five years old. her hands are thin, her knees are done, most of her people are gone, and she’s sitting in a chair by a window. and then somebody tells her she can have one day back. just one, in her young body, on a totally random day. and she opens her eyes and she’s here. the ordinary day she was just complaining about. and suddenly everything’s magic again. i stood there with my card in my hand and i forgot what i was ordering. i tried it that night, and i want to tell you what happened, because i was not in a good place. it had been a long gray stretch. i was doing everything on autopilot, the alarm, the commute, the same four thoughts going around and around. i kept waiting for my real life to start. i closed my eyes in my boring apartment and tried to picture being very old. and then i opened them, and i’ve got to tell you, i got a little choked up at my own kitchen. i could stand up without thinking about it. i could walk down the stairs. i could smell the coffee. the music on my phone was the same song i’d been skipping for a week, and it sounded like someone had given me new ears. the next morning i walked to the bus stop, and the light was coming sideways through the trees, and i thought, an old woman somewhere would give anything for this exact bad walk. my mom could call me today. i could call her back. someone i love is still out there being annoying. i know this doesn’t fix everything. if you’re in a really hard place, i’m not going to tell you to just be grateful, because that’s a terrible thing to tell someone, and some sadness needs more than a nice thought. please tell somebody about that kind. talk to someone who can really sit with you in it. a coffee and some sunlight can’t carry all of it, and you shouldn’t have to. but on the regular gray days, the ones where you’ve forgotten what any of this is for, try it. be eighty-five for a minute. look at your hands. and then come back, because you got the wish. you’re the old woman, and this is the day you asked for. go have the walk. have the coffee. turn the music up. let the sunlight land on you. live like today’s the miracle it actually is, because some day, you’d give everything you own to have it back, boring as it is.
