Today, Tabitha finally came with me to visit this little girl at Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop. We brought her forget-me-nots. I wanted her to have flowers. Something gentle and beautiful beside that weathered stone. And I wanted Tabitha to meet the little girl whose story I keep trying to understand. Topsey lived for about thirteen months. Her family’s cemetery is roughly five miles away. Why she rests here apart from them is still a question I cannot answer. But this visit gave me something happier to talk about. “Your younger brother Arthur grew up, Topsey. He had a little girl. And her name was Topsey, too.” Arthur was born after his sister’s short life had ended. They never got to meet. I haven’t found anything explaining his choice of name, so I can’t tell you what he intended. But there it was, in the family history. Another little girl called Topsey. I wanted to bring that news back here, to the first little girl’s resting place. To say her brother’s name beside hers. To spend some time talking about the family she never got to grow up with. I don’t know whether she hears me. I do know that I care about her. And today, Tabitha was there beside me, with flowers we had chosen for her. There was something comforting about that ordinary little visit. Introducing my wife. Sharing something I’d learned. Taking our time before saying goodbye. We couldn’t give Topsey the childhood she missed. We could give her part of our day. And when we left, the forget-me-nots stayed beside her name. Every Name Still Means Everything to Someone. — LEOTAB #FairviewCemeteryBastrop #ForgetMeNotFlowers #BastropFamilyHistory #RememberingChildren #FlowersOfRemembrance
