At Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop, her monument identifies her as the wife of Captain J. S. Jones. But I wanted to know who Lula was when someone called her name. The records took me back to a young woman with work to do in her church. In January 1898, Miss Lula Reynolds was elected secretary of Bastrop’s Epworth League. A report bearing her name survives. She wrote about their hopes for the work ahead: “we have great anticipations for our future work.” She was twenty. Later that year, a conference program listed her to present a paper on Junior League work. I haven’t confirmed whether she delivered it. But her name was there, among the people asked to contribute. Then I found the words of someone who remembered much more than a name. After Lula passed away on May 13, 1905, Reverend W. Wootton wrote that he had baptized her as a baby, received her into the church, and performed her marriage ceremony. He had known her through those beginnings. Now he was trying to find words for her absence. “What a lovely character she was.” That stayed with me. Because we can read her dates and learn that she was twenty-seven. We can admire the carving on her monument. But those few words bring us closer to the woman her community knew. I don’t know what took Lula’s life. I won’t fill that silence with a story I cannot prove. What survives is a young woman’s hopeful voice—and an older pastor’s remembrance of her character. Lula, today we’re remembering the faith you practiced, the work you offered, and the place you held among your people. Your name deserves that much room.
