The pickguard on this 1969 Jazz Bass shrunk up so much that these bits actually snapped off! Luckily, both pieces of the guard were floating around in the case, so let’s see if I can make this thing whole again. Since I obviously can’t stretch the guard back to its original proportions, I am going to have to move these screws. I started by plugging the original holes, which is usually a pretty quick and easy process, but this instrument being older than my grandparents makes things a little less quick and easy. This guard wants to keep shrinking, so rather than removing it, I am keeping as many screws in place as possible throughout the whole process. If you do ever have to have a celluloid guard off of an instrument for more than a few minutes, best practice is to screw it down to a piece of wood to prevent it from shrinking. I could have done that here, but I prefer to avoid complete removal if it isn't necessary. Once the glue was dry, I pared down the plugs using a few different chisels, being very careful to not damage the finish. I take my time to get everything flushed up, and just touch up the plug with a little black nitro to make it disappear. This will all live under the guard, so nobody but us will really know it is there, but I thought it was a nice touch. I repeat the process for the second plug before moving on to repairing the guard. A little bit of wax paper between the guard and the body will protect any errant glue from sticking anything together that I want to keep separate. I use a little bit of copper tape to help hold things together, and to give the glue a little support and bonding surface to combat the strain the guard will eventually encounter in the future. I drill a new hole and wax the screws before driving them into the wood. Again, I repeated this process for the other piece as well. I did go in and clean up the glue seams a little more, but didn’t bother to try to film it because the work was so delicate, and my face was so close to the bass, that I wouldn’t have been able to get any usable footage anyway. #guitar #bass #fender #gibson #stratocaster
