The Modern Church Bears Little Resemblance to the Ancient One - love when someone says, “Just find a Bible believing church, brother.” But most people have no idea how much of what happens in modern Christianity isn’t actually in the New Testament. A lot of what we call “biblical church” developed centuries later through church history, tradition, and institutional structure. Here are five big ones. 1. Denominations. Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Baptist, Pentecostal, non-denominational. None of those systems exist in the Bible. The New Testament speaks of one church, one body, the people of God. Not competing brands. Not fractured networks. That division model isn’t prescribed in Scripture. 2. Modern church titles. Executive pastor, youth pastor, worship pastor, Pope, cardinal. Zero mention. The New Testament shows deacons in Acts 6 serving food and meeting practical needs. Elders or presbyters shepherding and guiding. Overseers or bishops caring for multiple congregations. Preaching and teaching were shared responsibilities, not a CEO model built around one stage personality. 3. Church buildings. Early Christians met in homes. Large dedicated church buildings became normal after the 4th century. The temple and synagogue existed, yes, but they functioned very differently than modern Sunday services. There’s no command in the New Testament to pour massive resources into religious real estate. 4. Religious uniforms. Robes, special garments, branded team shirts. The New Testament never commands clergy fashion. Jesus criticized religious leaders who loved public display and status. 5. Confession to clergy. Scripture says confess your sins to one another. It calls all believers a royal priesthood. The layered hierarchy many churches operate with today isn’t outlined in apostolic teaching. This isn’t church bashing. It’s historical clarity. Much of what we defend as “Bible based Christianity” is tradition layered over time. Jesus confronted that in Mark 7 when tradition overshadowed love for God and neighbor. If our structures create division, control, or spiritual gatekeeping, we should pause. The heart of the gospel is unity, shared life, servant leadership, and embodied love.
