😏Let me tell you a story… 👵🏻Picture it, Georgetown 2021. A mother in her 40s attends brunch with a few childhood friends that took place on the beautiful waterfront in Washington, DC. 🥂The weather was perfect & the company even better! That’s usually where the media will have the story end. But that’s not how it played out for me. I chose to drive home drunk for 45 minutes, running my car into a barrier. When I woke up the next day, I had no recollection of it at all. My husband pointed out the damage done to the right side of my car. And that, for me, was my rock bottom & the reason why my former bestie, Alcohol & I broke up. There were other times when I should have had that moment of enlightenment way before this accident but this was different & here’s why .. 💡It scared TF out of me-I had NO recollection of that wreck. I only remember getting home from brunch, taking a nap, walking Odin with Maddie, & then watching a movie with her. I had a pit in my stomach all night long but couldn’t figure out why.. 💡I have sole custody of Maddie; it was a very complicated situation. When I saw the damage done to my car, it hit me that I could have k!lled myself! Visions of heated custody cases bc I’m not there flashed through my mind. I saw Maddie filled with sadness & anxiety bc of my stupidity & quite honestly, my selfishness 🥺 💡Drama in my 40s is quite embarrassing. I’m seriously too old for that isssh… if I had gotten pulled over, how would I explain being in jail to my family? More importantly, how would that affect our life & bank account? That was pretty much it for me. That’s not to say I didn’t almost cave SEVERAL times - I was fired 10 days later, btw - but every time the thought even crossed my mind, my car & Maddie’s future quickly took over. 👉I can never go back to living the life of a daily drinker. NEVER. 👉I didn’t realize how much I was actually risking until it came too close to losing it all. I am grateful my definition of fun no longer risks my life or deteriorates my mental health. Today, fun is whatever brings me JOY!
