Pagosa Springs, Colorado, was hit by two major floods in less than two weeks. The San Juan River rose to dangerous levels, washing away riverbanks, damaging homes, and leaving parts of town in ruins. I traveled to Pagosa Springs to see the flood damage for myself. Along the San Juan River, I found massive trees piled up along the banks, mud everywhere, and buildings sitting dangerously close to the water. One of the hardest hit areas was near the Pagosa Springs History Museum, where the river washed away so much ground that part of the building was left hanging over the river. Not far away, a house was swept downstream and crashed into a bridge. I also flew my drone over the damaged neighborhoods, where several homes were left hanging over the eroded riverbank. We visit The Springs Resort, where several of the hot spring pools were filled with mud and silt from the flooding. But there’s another side to this story. I met up with Jessie, a local resident who had been documenting the floods as they happened. She took me around town and introduced me to people who were already cleaning up their neighborhoods. We also stopped at a local coffee shop to hear how the flooding has affected businesses and tourism. Pagosa Springs has been through a lot, and many people here depend on tourism to make a living. The town needs help recovering, and one way to support it is by visiting when conditions are safe, eating at local restaurants, and supporting local businesses. The San Juan River is also connected to Lake Powell and the Colorado River system. Water from this part of Colorado eventually makes its way downstream to Lake Powell.
