2026. November 8. IF YOU COULD HAVE SEEN US TODAY, NONNA… ❤️ “I have learned to live without you, Nonna. I have never learned to stop needing you.” Alessandra Graziella Di’Stefano Nonna, Nico and I went to one of your favorite places today. I thought about you the entire time. Not just the beautiful memories, but the things that still hurt. The fact that I can travel so far, see so much of this world, grow older, experience things I never imagined, and still find myself wishing I could go home and tell you about my day. We found a few wildflowers. Nothing extraordinary, just little flowers growing where they pleased. Nico and I picked a few, made our wishes, and blew them into the wind. And I wanted to cry. Because I remembered being young enough to believe that making a wish was all it took to change something. That the people who loved us would always be somewhere we could return to. That there would be another visit, another conversation, another afternoon sitting together. I didn't understand then how permanent goodbye could be. Nico was beside me today, and I cannot tell you how much having my brother here has meant to me. We have been laughing, wandering around, talking about everything and nothing. Sometimes we're adults discussing our lives, and five minutes later we're behaving like the same two children who used to get into mischief together. You would have loved seeing us like this. And that thought hurts more than I expected. Because you should have been able to see us grow older. You should have had more afternoons with us. More birthdays, more ridiculous family conversations, more opportunities to tell us what you thought about everything. I would gladly listen to you repeat a story I'd already heard a hundred times. I wish I had asked you more questions, Nonna. I wish I had paid closer attention to the ordinary details of your life. The things you remembered about Sicily. The people you missed. The dreams you had before you became everyone's mother and grandmother. I knew you as the woman who loved and cared for us, but there was an entire life inside you that I wish I'd understood more deeply. That's one of the cruel things about losing someone. You don't only miss what you had. You begin to understand everything you will never have the opportunity to know. I still catch myself wanting to tell you things. When something wonderful happens, I want to share it with you. When life becomes difficult, I want your reassurance. And sometimes I don't want advice or answers at all. I just want to sit beside you and hear you breathing, knowing you're there. People talk about grief becoming easier with time. Perhaps some parts do. You learn to function. You laugh again. You travel. You make plans. You build a life around an absence you never wanted. But there are moments when the years mean absolutely nothing. Today was one of them. I stood there with my brother, holding those little flowers, and I missed you with the same helplessness I felt when I first realized I couldn't see you again. I don't know whether wishes travel anywhere. I don't know whether you can see us, or whether the words I still speak to you reach beyond my own heart. I only know that I wanted you there. And when Nico and I blew those flowers into the wind, I wasn't wishing for anything grand. I just wanted one more ordinary day with you. One where nobody was saying goodbye. I love you, Nonna. I miss you terribly. And I hope you knew, while you were here, how much of our world was held together simply because you were in it. Your granddaughter, always. ❤️ Alessandra
