8 point is for square head bolts. yes they exist mostly used as plugs for various things. very common on aircraft engines

I use 12 point if I'm in a tight spot, gives me different angles to fit the socket around the bolt.

You also able to get socket on nut every 30 degrees with 12 point rather than 60. This is good if working in tight spaces. 12 point 1/4 6pt 3/8 way2go
