2 OCTOBER — THE DAY JERUSALEM RETURNED On 2 October 1187, Salahuddin Yusuf ibn Ayyub — known to the West as Saladin — entered Jerusalem after the city surrendered to his forces, bringing the city back under Muslim rule after nearly nine decades of Crusader control.
