Since 1989, a single whale has wandered the Pacific, singing a song no other whale responds to. We don’t know what it looks like, its size, or even its exact species. Shipping noise and sonar have risen dramatically, masking the calls marine life depends on to survive. ​Unlike plastic, noise pollution disappears the moment we stop. But until we do, the ocean remains a wall of static. We didn’t create its silence. We just removed the space where connection might have been possible.
