Are steroids good for everybody? Absolutely not. But for the right person, at the right time, they can make a meaningful difference. I’m seeing so many people with MCAS struggling with the “October slide” right now. And for some, these flares are devastating. The combination of profound fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain can make it nearly impossible to work, function, or even get through the day. And when these flares last weeks or even months, we need tools to help people get through them. Sometimes, a good old-fashioned corticosteroid can be one of those tools. Of course, steroids come with risks. Some people actually feel worse on them, and they’re certainly not something we want to rely on long term. When we use them, we aim for the lowest effective dose, the shortest reasonable duration, and monitor people carefully. Others respond better to antihistamines, occasionally benzodiazepines for specific symptoms, or anti-inflammatory medications like Celebrex. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. But for someone dealing with debilitating fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain during a prolonged flare, a carefully selected short course of steroids can sometimes provide meaningful relief. The goal isn’t to put everyone on steroids. It’s to recognize that when someone is barely functioning, we have options worth considering. Sometimes we need to help people get through a really difficult stretch while we work toward longer-term stability. #mcas #pots #heds #dysautonomia #mastcellactivationsyndrome
