He told her he was going to walk his daughter across that field. On September 29, 2023, he did exactly that. Carrying his oxygen with him, Brett slowly made his way across the field beside Sarakate. Then came another moment the family had been hoping for. Sarakate was crowned homecoming queen. Carrie later recalled the emotion in the stadium as her husband stood beside their youngest daughter for the celebration. Brett continued fighting cancer after that night, and his family and community rallied around him. He had spent years as a teacher and coach, including coaching his own daughters in sports.
