DISCLAIMER: I want to be clear that my issue is with the Mormon church itself, not with individual people. I’m genuinely happy for those whose experiences in the church transcended its patriarchal messaging, and I really hope that happens more for future generations. But I think it’s important to recognize the difference between personal experience and what the church actually teaches. Doing so stops the church from looking more progressive than it really is and validates the experiences of people who’ve been hurt by its rigid gender roles. It also puts the historical impact of these teachings into perspective. I had a friend who left the church before I did, and one of her main reasons was the gender roles and lack of power for women. I remember saying to her, “Well, I’ve never felt disempowered as a woman in the church!” And she responded “But what about all the women who have?” That really stuck with me. I eventually realized that even if I didn’t feel disempowered personally (which, looking back, I definitely was), I was still supporting an institution that harmed a lot of women. I keep wanting to apologize for being so passionate or for not being more careful with my words, but honestly, this stuff runs deep. And after hearing hundreds, if not thousands, of women’s stories about how these gender roles and hierarchy have negatively impacted them, I know this really matters. Oh and the “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” conversation I’m referring happened on the @The Viall Files podcast episode E807- Going Deeper w/The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives #secretlivesofmormonwives #slomw #viallfiles #momtok #mormon #lds #postmormon
