@i.belongtothesky: Today we visited a place that had been on my list for a long time: Hashima, also known as Gunkanjima, the "warship island", due to its resemblance to a ship (so much so that according to some reports during the Second World War it was torpedoed by the US Navy, probably deceived by the shape of the island which from the sea appeared quite similar to a battleship). At the end of the 19th century, the island was colonized by the Japanese due to the presence of an important mineral deposit, so the first houses were built for the workers who moved en masse to the island with their families. The island is 480 meters long and 150 meters wide and had the highest population density in recorded history anywhere in the world. At the end of the sixties, however, the demand for coal decreased and the mining site was closed, with the consequent abandonment of the island in just 3 months. . Oggi abbiamo visitato un posto che era sulla mia lista da tantissimo: Hashima, nota anche come Gunkanjima, l"isola della nave da guerra", per la somiglianza a una nave appunto (tanto che secondo alcuni rapporti durante la seconda guerra mondiale fu silurata dalla marina militare statunitense, probabilmente ingannata dalla forma dell'isola che dal mare appariva del tutto simile a una corazzata). Alla fine dell’800 l'isola fu colonizzata dai giapponesi per la presenza di un importante giacimento minerario, vennero quindi costruite le prime abitazioni per i lavoratori che si trasferirono in massa sull’isola con le loro famiglie. L’isola è lunga 480 metri e larga 150 metri ed aveva la più alta densità di popolazione nella storia registrata in tutto il mondo.
