There’s something so heartbreaking about staring at somebody’s contact information and realizing that the only thing stopping you from reaching out is remembering that they’re the one who decided they didn’t want you in their life anymore. Because imagine having one of those random moments where something reminds you of them. Maybe you hear a song you used to listen to together, see something funny that you know they’d laugh at, or remember a conversation you had months ago. And suddenly, without even thinking about it, you’re opening your messages and searching for their name. It’s almost automatic. Your fingers remember what your heart is still trying to forget. 😭 You open the conversation, look at the last messages you exchanged, and for a second you consider typing something simple. Maybe just “hey.” Maybe “how have you been?” Or maybe something completely casual that gives you an excuse to talk without admitting how much you’ve missed them. And then reality hits. They’re the one who stopped talking to you. They’re the one who created the distance. They’re the one who made it clear, through their words or actions, that they didn’t want to continue the connection. And suddenly that innocent little message feels like the most embarrassing thing you could possibly send. Because what if they don’t respond? What if they leave you on read? What if they answer politely but make it obvious that they’re not interested in talking? Or even worse, what if they respond warmly for a few hours, make you feel hopeful again, and then disappear just like they did before? And that’s the part nobody really talks about when it comes to missing somebody. Sometimes the hardest thing isn’t resisting the urge to contact them. It’s knowing that you still want to talk to somebody who may not want to talk to you anymore. You start wondering whether they ever think about reaching out too. Whether they’ve opened your conversation and stared at your name. Whether they hear certain songs and remember you. Whether they ever miss the late-night calls, the random updates, or the little inside jokes that once made your connection feel so special. But you have no way of knowing, and trying to guess only makes everything more exhausting. So you close the conversation. You put your phone down. You tell yourself you’re not going to be the one to break the silence. And five minutes later, you’re thinking about them again because apparently your brain didn’t receive the memo. 😭 But here’s something important: missing somebody doesn’t make you weak, and reaching out to someone isn’t automatically embarrassing. There’s nothing shameful about caring. What matters is respecting the boundaries that have been established and protecting yourself from repeatedly pursuing a connection that isn’t being reciprocated. If somebody clearly asked for no contact, respecting that decision matters, even when it hurts. And if they simply stopped putting effort into the relationship, you’re allowed to recognize that you shouldn’t have to carry the entire connection by yourself. Sometimes you don’t need another conversation to understand that things have changed. Sometimes you already know what happened, and you’re just struggling to accept that somebody who used to be part of your everyday life has become somebody you no longer speak to. And healing from that takes time. You might still want to tell them about your day. You might still wonder what they’re doing. You might still have moments when you wish everything could go back to the way it was. But you can experience all those feelings without acting on every one of them. Because sometimes the hardest part of missing somebody isn’t that you don’t know what to say. It’s that you have a thousand things you wish you could tell them, but you’re finally learning to accept that not every person you miss is s
