What’s the thing you’ve been told about your voice? “You’re too monotone.” “You’re too expressive.” “You sound angry.” “You sound robotic.” “You sound like you’re reading from a script.” “You sound too formal.” “You sound sarcastic when you aren’t.” Turns out, autistic communication isn’t just about what we say. It can also be about how we naturally say it. 😅 PS If doing a tone rollercoaster of ups and downs drains you of ENERGY.. that’s a hearty hint too. For my deep divers👇 Fusaroli, R., Grossman, R. B., Bilenberg, N., & Cantio, C. (2017). Is voice a marker for autism spectrum disorder? A systematic review and meta-analysis. Autism Research, 10(3), 384-407. Asghari, S. Z., Farashi, S., Bashirian, S., et al. (2021). Distinctive prosodic features of people with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis study. Scientific Reports, 11, 23093. Song, Y., Kuang, C., & Chen, F. (2026). Unstable or Stable? Prosodic Features and Voice Quality in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. 🧠 As always, what I share is based on my experience as an autistic speech pathologist working in autism assessment, the lived experiences of the autistic community, and what I’ve seen across 8 years of assessment work. These insights reflect common themes I’ve observed in clinical settings, assessment conversations, and client storytelling. It may not apply to everyone, and research is still catching up on a lot of this. ‼️ This content is for general education and shared understanding, it is not clinical advice or a diagnostic service.
