HERE’S WHY JAPAN IC CARDS ARE A PAIN (NO ONE TELLS YOU THIS) *DISCLAIMER* you can reload your card at any 7/11, family mart etc but if you don’t have one near you, and you’re in a hurry, you are SOL* ❌ You can’t reload your IC card on your phone unless you have a MASTERCARD Visa usually won’t work for mobile IC reloads. ❌ Most stations DON’T have tap-to-pay / phone-friendly ticket machines • Tokyo has more • Kyoto & Osaka have very few • Smaller cities? Basically none ❌ Yes, you can go to the ticket booth… but it’s a hassle Long lines, language barrier, and it slows everything down. ❌ If your IC card is on your phone, you CANNOT reload the physical card Once it’s digital, that’s it — no switching back to the physical card to reload. ⸻ WHAT I WISH I KNEW BEFORE COMING 👉 Bring a physical IC card + cash 👉 Don’t rely on Apple Wallet unless you have Mastercard 👉 Tokyo ≠ rest of Japan
