As an OT + mum, this is one of my favourite parts of our bedtime routine. I use firm, slow, rhythmic massage and keep the same pattern each night, counting as I go. I’m intentionally giving him predictable proprioceptive and tactile input through his muscles, joints and skin. Why do I love this before bed? -Proprioceptive input can be calming and organising for the nervous system. -Rhythmic, predictable touch gives his nervous system information that is consistent and easy to anticipate. -Repetition helps create a familiar cue that bedtime is approaching. -And perhaps most importantly, it’s a lovely opportunity for connection and co-regulation before we transition to sleep. For us, the same pattern, the same counting and the same gentle connection have become part of our bedtime rhythm.
