Justice Clarence Thomas asked the first question Thursday in the Colorado ballot eligibility case centered on former President Trump appearing on the state’s ballot. He asked whether Section 3 of the 14th Amendment is “self-executing” by states or whether it requires a federal statue by Congress. Chief Justice John Roberts followed Justice Thomas on the line of questioning. #scotus #supremecourt #trump #14thamendment #colorado #election2024 #cspan

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Wednesday said all Americans — regardless of political affiliation — are "united" in their frustration over the cost of prescription drugs. "We are sick and tired of paying, by far, the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs," the Senate Health Committee chair said from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Noting there is more work to be done, Sen. Sanders highlighted some of the recent steps taken by congressional Democrats and the Biden administration to help alleviate the high cost of medication. He pointed out that the Inflation Reduction Act, which passed along party lines in both chambers in 2022, caps the price of prescription drugs for seniors and limits the cost of insulin to no more than $35 per month. The law also restricts how much pharmaceutical companies can increase their prices and allows Medicare, for the first time in history, to negotiate the price of some drugs. #berniesanders #sanders #healthcare #whitehouse #cspan
Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) criticized Democrats on Tuesday for trying to advance a bill to protect in vitro fertilization (IVF), saying the vote was unnecessary. “Republicans support IVF, full stop,” he told reporters ahead of a procedural vote on the Right to IVF Act. “This is not an attempt to make law. This is not an attempt to make an outcome or legislate. This is simply an attempt by Democrats to try to create a political issue where there isn’t one.” The bill, which was introduced by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), would establish a nationwide right to access IVF, expand fertility treatments for veterans and seek to make the procedure more affordable. The legislation failed to advance in June as Republicans voted against it, calling it a “show vote” that doesn’t address an existing issue, noting that IVF is not illegal to access in any state. Sen. Thune suggested the Senate instead vote on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) or any of the 12 annual appropriations bills that have already passed committee. #johnthune #ivf #senate #cspan
