Jesus explains He is not talking about political slavery to Rome, but spiritual slavery: > "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin... So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." - John 8:34,36 ### Then the confrontation you remembered He tells them: > "I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father." - John 8:37-38 They claim: "Abraham is our father. God is our Father." And then Jesus says the line you said — very heavy in the film, he says it slowly and sadly: > *"If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God... You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies."* - John 8:42,44 > "Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God." - John 8:47 What Jesus means 1. *Abide in My Word* — not just hear it once, but live in it, stay in it daily. That's how you become a true disciple. 2. *Truth that frees* — Truth is not just an idea, Truth is a Person. Jesus Himself is the Truth (John 14:6). Knowing Him breaks the power of sin. 3. *Two fathers* — Jesus is dividing everyone into two families: Those born of God who love truth, and those who follow the devil whose nature is to lie, hate, and murder. There's no middle ground. This is why right after this scene, they pick up stones to kill Him in John 8:59.
