One of the most heartbreaking performances ever given by a child actor. Ponette (1996), directed by Jacques Doillon, follows a four-year-old girl who loses her mother in a car accident and struggles to understand what death actually means. Instead of accepting that her mother is gone, Ponette keeps searching for a way to bring her back, turning grief, religion, childhood imagination, and hope into something deeply personal. What makes the film so powerful is how closely it stays with Ponette’s point of view. The adults try to explain death to her, but she understands the world in her own way, creating her own beliefs and answers. And then there’s Victoire Thivisol. She was only four when the film was made, yet her performance feels remarkably natural and emotionally raw. She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 1996 Venice Film Festival, becoming one of the youngest performers ever to receive the award.
