@optimum_modern: Starting on the journey of restoring this Stanley Furniture Rosewood and walnut sideboard which sadly was poorly painted red. It’s always a gamble restoring painted pieces as you really never know what you’ll find underneath. Usually with a poor paint job the prior refinisher skips any prep work and slaps paint on the piece as is. Surprisingly that was not the case here. The piece was sanded down to raw wood using an orbital sander with a fairly abrasive sand paper. Then it was primed with a white primer. These little details may not seem like a big deal but it adds another dimension of complexity to an already difficult restoration. By removing the old finish, the primer can penetrate deep into every wood pores and sanding scratch. If the old finish was left alone it keeps all primer and paint above the wood making removal much easier. Now that the primer is in the wood pores it’ll take a massive amount of time, stripper, and a stiff bristle brush to massage the primer out. Besides the white primer being all over the piece it has a good deal of damage. Dings, dents, scratches etc from years of use. Then there’s the additional damage resulting in the aggressive sanding prep work consisting of veneer burn throughs. Not every restoration goes to plan and this may be one of them. Do we press on?
