5 year old swears during a tantrum which is the behaviour we are trying to reduce, do I still ignore? Yes, in the moment you ignore a tantrum, but you can address the swearing after it’s done. Say earlier you were saying bad words, so there's a consequence for that. Don't mention the tantrum. You never discuss the tantrum before, during or after. There is no point whatsoever. Tantrums are just an emotional lack of control at not getting what they want when they want and how they want it. You do not need to address any feelings or thoughts around that. Does it ever happen that something has to go back on the behaviour board after it’s been worked out in the past? Past rules do come up, but I wouldn’t put it on the behaviour board. I would just verbalize it. If you worked it out in the past, like, let’s say no hitting your sister, it worked out, and he stopped hitting his sister, but a month later, your kid starts up again, I would say … I’ll tell you what, remember the old consequences, that’s what’s happening now. So that’s what you do, it’s already been dealt with. They remember that, so bring it back, you don’t have to put it up on a board anymore. I wouldn’t stop bad habits with kids, but rather use redirection. You may even want to look up stress toys, or you can get the poppers, there’s all sorts of little things there. So you’re making them aware of it, but making it clear that this is not bad behavior. It’s just a bad habit. Have parenting questions?
