The original chant is recorded in Pedro de San Buenaventura’s Vocabulario de Lengua Tagala (1613), one of the earliest known Tagalog dictionaries. The Lakapati prayer and ritual represent a key pre-colonial Tagalog practice centered on fertility, agriculture, and communal sustenance. Farmers invoked Lakapati, a hermaphroditic deity depicted with both male and female attributes, during planting season to ensure bountiful harvests and protection from famine. In new fields, during maganito (offerings), a farmer lifted a child skyward as a symbolic offering, chanting: “Lakapati, pakanin mo yaring alipin mo; huwag mong gutumin” (Lakapati, feed this thy slave; let him not hunger).
