![🚨 Handling brutal feedback 👇 🧠 Giving constructive feedback is a skill and unfortunately not everyone who is required to give feedback is skilled. This means sometimes we may find ourselves on the receiving end of pretty bad feedback 😳 ▶️ When this happens our instinctive reaction will be to defend ourselves and push back. This is a completely natural and understandable response. 🚫 I would also recommend avoiding responding in this way so that YOU stay in control of the conversation. So how do you do that: 1️⃣ Stay calm and take a deep breath 2️⃣ Politely interrupt by saying “[NAME] can I pause you for a second” 3️⃣ Let them know you’re keen to receive their feedback AND then teach them how you need to receive feedback! This could sound like: “I really want to hear this feedback. I’m also noticing I’m feeling overwhelmed and defensive. Can we focus on [INSERT] as I’m struggling to take all this in” 4️⃣ Ask them to give you some specific examples so you can try to make sense of what they’re saying. 🔥We can learn a lot from constructive respectful feedback and be crushed by unconstructive inconsiderate feedback.
