But if you’ve controlled everything for years, then suddenly your teenager wants independence, both of you may struggle. They haven’t practised freedom. And you haven’t practised trusting them. Of course, parents should know where teenagers are going, who they’re with, how they’re getting home and have sensible boundaries. But the goal shouldn’t be to prevent your child from having a social life.
