Here’s how I create one of my larger, lined vessels, pots that are designed to be either a vase for flowers, or simply a decorative piece, made with protrusion of stoneware that’s fettled into a point, as if a continuation of the rim. My glazes always break most dramatically around the sharp rim. The clay and glaze at this edge turn into an orange-red, that’s often metallic, a stark, and welcome contrast to the glassy green that otherwise covers the vase. The line will encourage the glaze to do the same thing, yet instead of it occurring on the top of the pot, it appears on the side, creating a line, a point of interest, as compared to what would otherwise be a very simple angular pot. As my packaging up comes to and end and I begin a new round of making, I want to throw more of these, some the same, others with different and new clay bodies, a few even left raw on the outside, black or white, with only a thin, liner glaze covering the interior form. #pottery #vase #studiopottery #satisfying #madeinlondon
I'm Too Fast 🏃♂️🔥 | Very rushed edit, sorry for being inactive recently. Will be back with the edits very soon 🙏🏻🩵 | #Flash #theflash #theflashedit #barryallen #imtoofast #trend #fyp #foryoupage #xyzbca #aftereffects #rigzy
I’m dying to see these pots glazed and fired. I would say it won’t be long until that happens but I’ve got a lot of pots to throw before I can begin glazing and firing again. My gas kiln has an internal capacity of 340 litres, (12 cubic foot), and firing one pot inside simply wouldn’t work, and it would be a colossal waste of fuel. I’m still finding this clay in my reclaim. I’m wedging it thoroughly into batches of my regular stoneware, blending it in, meaning that for a while, my pots will be made from clay that’s a bit coarser, bowls especially, as that’s what I’m working on today. This red colour you see in the video won’t last. It’ll turn into a sort of crimson-black once reduction fired, with big spots of molten bronze on the surface, red dashes, much like the iron specks you’ll commonly see on my pots, only larger. I’m leaning towards a simple, red glaze for these, this way the bronze dots blend into the body. What do you think? #clay #satisfying #howitsmade #pottery #wheelthrownpottery #stoneware

Doors open and window, mask on. I try to ventilate my workshop as best I can before mixing and sieving my glazes. Before the events in this video, all the raw materials you can see here have been dumped into a bucket half filled with water, this way less dust is launched into the air, compared to say, if you placed all the dry ingredients into the bucket, and then splashed water over them. You don’t want to breathe this stuff in, glaze dust, long-term exposure can potentially lead to silicosis, so as soon as I tip the powdery kaolin or feldspar in, I quickly set the lid on top of the container and leave it for a few moments, until the worst has settled. Once slaked down a bit, I stick the mixer in, turn it on, and leave it for 10-15 minutes, (whilst I’m doing other jobs, preparing more glazes, and so on), then it’s all pushed through a 100-mesh sieve and finally it’s ready to use, for pots to be dipped into. If you happen to watch until the end, you’ll see how it looks once reduction fired to 1290ºc. #glaze #pottery #ceramics #celadon #handmade #craftsmanship
Waxing isn’t a creative task, it’s just one step in the process that needs to be done in order to make others easier. Although this video doesn’t show one of my ‘usual’ glazes, the how’s and why’s still hold true. For those of you who don’t know, if a base of the pot is glazed and it’s placed into the kiln as per normal, it’ll fuse to the kiln shelf. Now, you can glaze pots as whole and still fire them, you just have to prop them up of stilts or waddings, both of which will leave lasting impressions on the pot that’ll carefully need to be ground and polished away once glaze fired, so instead, I simply remove ALL the glaze from the bases of my pots, this way I don’t have to painstakingly clean them all up afterwards. A job I’m well practiced in after soda firing pots for three years during my apprenticeship, a process where every single pot’s base needs some attention, sometimes this only takes 5 seconds, other times a single vessel could take 20 minutes to properly, and neatly, fix. In the case of my usual feldspathic crackle glazes that go on tremendously thickly, if I weren’t wax my pots, I’d have to spend time carving away up to 2-3 mm of glaze off the bottoms, which would be hell, frankly. You can use a soaked sponge or a specially cut piece of foam or carpet to do this too, into which you place the glazed pot and rotate a number of times, the material grinding away the glaze on the pot’s bottoms, yet again, due to the sheer amount of glaze that I use, this would be a long, messy process, so wax is best. If instead I ALWAYS used thin glazes like the blue nuka in this video, then I could get away with carefully fettling the glaze off on a flat sponge or pad of wetted foam, but truth be told, I like the accuracy I’m able to achieve doing it all by hand, by waxing the bases and thereafter tidying the feet up with a small piece of sponge and a paring knife. I miss this cup shape. I haven’t made any for a while like it, although I think the most pressing issue is that my current batch of nuka glaze fires more of a white tone, even when applied thinly, and I’m not entirely sure why. #pottery #glaze #handmade #satisfying #ceramics
